What kind of questions can I ask ?
There are some basic rules here. You cannot ask for lottery numbers, winning
horses for the Grand National (believe me, people have tried!) or the name of
your true love. It's also best not to ask a question which demands a
"yes" or "no" answer, as the Tarot doesn't really work like
that. It's always a good idea to frame your question in a way that works with
the cards. For instance, rather than "Will I get a new job?" you
should think along the lines of "How can I improve my chances of getting a
new job?". Likewise rather than "Will my partner marry me?" you
could ask "What is the best way for me to approach my relationship" or
"What do I need to know to move forward with my partner?". The Tarot
is a guide, not a yes/no machine.
Can the Tarot predict the future ?
Yes and no! While the Tarot can give insights into future events and trends
which will come into play, the future is constantly changing, and more
importantly you have the power to change your own destiny. So, if a tarot
reading shows a negative outcome to your question, take it as a warning and try
and steer your future away from that negative influence or event. Or, take the
opportunity to adjust your thinking and accept the turn of events by finding a
positive within them. It is here that the cards are so valuable.
Are the cards dangerous? What about the
Death card ?
Television programmes and horror films have given the world a rather skewed
vision of the Tarot. A good example is the fear that many people have that the
Death card signals an actual physical death. This is simply not so, the cards
are symbolic, and the "death" signified by the card is also symbolic.
For example it can herald the ending of a situation, usually to make way for
something new. It's often a positive card, depending on the cards surrounding
it.
As to the question are the cards themselves dangerous, my answer would be
absolutely not! They are after all just cards. It's the interpretation of the
symbols which gives the reading. Any tarot reader who scares you is one to
strike off your list. The Tarot is a helpful guide, and to scare your clients is
not exactly a helpful way to go about your tarot readings.
Are the meanings of each card always
the same ?
No. Each card has a number of possible meanings and any one of these will apply
depending on a number of factors. The question asked, the surrounding cards, and
the general tone of the reading will all add to the interpretation of the cards.
A card which is very positive in one tarot reading may have quite different
connotations in another. Card combinations have a big effect on interpretation
as well, for example a fiery personality may be tempered by a cup card nearby,
or a loss of income card could be boosted by a more positive card nearby
suggesting the loss will be small.
What are reversed cards and do you use
them ?
Some tarot readers use reversed cards, usually by deliberately reversing some of
the cards prior to shuffling the deck. It is a very personal decision whether to
use them or not. They can be seen as a negative version of the upright card, or
as being weakened or delayed. I do not use reversed cards, as I believe that
there are enough meanings in the 78 cards to cover all human experience and
emotion without deliberately introducing reversals. When you take into account
card combinations the possibilities for extra meanings are so many that I do not
feel the need to add more.
